BYD in Norway: models, prices, and who they suit

BYD is one of the best-selling EV brands in Norway. See the Sealion 7, Seal U, Dolphin, Atto 3 Evo, and Seal – prices, range, charging, and honest buyer advice.

BYD Sealion 7

Why BYD has become so common in Norway

A few years ago BYD was a name most Norwegians did not know how to pronounce. Today it sits in car parks from Tromsø to Kristiansand. The recipe is simple: a lot of car, a lot of equipment, and prices that make established brands feel a draught. BYD is the world’s largest EV maker, and Norway – where almost every new car is electric – is one of the most competitive markets it can test itself in.

If you want to compare the numbers yourself, start with the BYD Sealion 7, the BYD that most often shows up on registration lists, and browse the rest in the model catalog.

BYD Sealion 7 and BYD Seal U: the family SUVs

The BYD Sealion 7 is the sporty coupé-SUV with a big battery (around 82 kWh) and all-wheel drive in Norway. The catalog price starts around NOK 470,000–500,000, depending on trim and campaign. The BYD Seal U is the more ordinary family car: more headroom, an 87 kWh battery, and roughly 500 km WLTP range, for around NOK 400,000.

If you are unsure what you need, the Seal U is often the more sensible of the two. The Sealion 7 is for those who also want a car that is a bit fun to drive. Remember that WLTP is a summer number – read why WLTP and real-world range are not the same before you plan the winter trip to the cabin.

BYD Dolphin and BYD Atto 3 Evo: affordable entry

The BYD Dolphin is the city car: compact, simple, and from around NOK 300,000. The standard version has a battery of about 44 kWh and roughly 340 km WLTP range, while the Extended Range version has 60 kWh and about 430 km. The BYD Atto 3 Evo is the slightly larger compact SUV with a 74.8 kWh battery and about 420 km, from around NOK 389,000 in 4x4 form according to the catalog.

The Dolphin with the small battery fits best as a second car or for those who drive short trips and have home charging. If it is your only car and you drive far, go for the Extended Range.

BYD Seal, Han, and Tang: the bigger cars

The BYD Seal is the sedan that takes on the Tesla Model 3, with all-wheel drive from around NOK 470,000. The BYD Han is the flagship sedan above NOK 600,000, and the BYD Tang is the big SUV with room for seven, also around NOK 600,000. They are interesting, but volumes in Norway are far lower than for the Sealion 7 and Seal U.

Charging and winter in a BYD

BYD often uses LFP (“Blade”) batteries in several of its models. They tolerate frequent charging to 100% better than many other chemistries, but are more sensitive to cold. Expect longer charging times on cold winter days, and pre-heat the car while it is plugged in. At home, home charging makes daily life easy; if you have no private space, read EV without a home charger.

Always check the charging curve for your exact version before buying. Charging power varies between models, and not all are equally fast on DC. Use the charging calculator to estimate costs.

Who should choose a BYD – and who should wait?

BYD suits you if you want a lot of car for the money, like good equipment as standard, and do not mind driving a badge not everyone knows. Be extra careful if resale value matters, if you rely on a dense service network where you live, or if you often drive far in winter. Always test-drive and compare at least one rival, for example the Volkswagen ID.4 or the Škoda Enyaq.

Catalog prices are indicative and campaigns change often. Confirm final price and equipment with the dealer.
