What separates leasing and buying
When you buy, you own the car and can sell it later. With leasing you pay to use the car for a set period, typically 24–48 months, then return it. For EVs that means you avoid guessing how much the battery and residual value will drop — but you also do not build equity in the vehicle.
In Norway both private leasing and buying are common. The choice is more about cash flow, how long you want to keep the car, and how confident you are that the model will hold value — not about EV versus combustion as such.
Economics: monthly cost vs total cost
Leasing can look cheaper month to month because residual value is built into the contract. Buying needs more capital up front, but can be cheaper over five years if you drive a lot, keep the car longer, or sell into a strong used market. Always include insurance, tyres, service, and electricity — not just the lease payment or loan interest.
Check the mileage cap in the lease carefully. Norwegian EV drivers who do cabin trips, long commuting, or lots of work driving often hit the limit. Extra kilometres can make a “cheap” lease more expensive than a loan.
When leasing fits — and when buying is smarter
Leasing fits if you want a predictable monthly cost, like changing cars often, or feel unsure about battery tech and residual value. Buying fits if you plan to own for a long time, have equity available, or want full freedom with charging, tyres, and usage without worrying about hand-back conditions.
