What does it cost to own an EV in Norway?

Purchase and depreciation

EVs often have higher list prices than comparable petrol or diesel cars, but depreciation and running costs decide the picture over time. Popular long-range models often hold value better in the used market. Calculate total cost over 1–5 years: purchase minus residual value, plus electricity, insurance, service, tyres, and any loan interest.

Charging, insurance, and service

Home charging is cheapest and often a fraction of what petrol would cost for the same mileage. Public charging – especially fast charging – is more expensive, so the share of home charging strongly affects the budget. Insurance can be similar to, or slightly higher than, a fossil car, depending on model and claims history.

Servicing is often cheaper because there are fewer wear parts, but tyres, brakes, and occasional battery-related diagnostics still need a budget. Winter tyres and wheels are a real cost in Norway regardless of powertrain.

When is an EV cheapest overall?

An EV usually wins if you drive a lot each year, charge at home, and choose a model that does not lose too much value.
